After trying many things I decided that this should become the bridge. Here is the full melody:
Writing the verse
While playing around I caught myself singing some old melodies that I recognized. Things were starting to fall into place.
The lyric that I was singing was from an older video about how to write a melancholic song. Maybe you remember it. Luckily the chord progression is the same. I just need to transpose it and also the bpm is not that different.

Writing the chorus section
We are almost there. We have a verse and a bridge. Only the chorus is missing. I need more contrast. The chorus needs to stand out. That’s why I want this song to become a duet. This will give the lyrics an extra layer and impact.
Now comes the tricky part. I want it to have female vocals. But I don’t know anybody who wants to sing on my demo. So what do we do with the chorus? The verse has melodies that are in a comfortable singing register. They are quite calm and the lyrics have a predictable rhyme scheme. The bridge has a bit more spice. You can sense some more urgency and there is more tension going on.
So what I want is that the chorus emphasizes the sad verse lyrics. I chose to have a chorus with longer melody lines. The lyrics are easy to remember because they repeat. Also, there is more dissonance between the chord progression and the melody. Especially on the D#m chord.
