Great foundation for understanding modes

I really liked the content in this course. Even if you have the basics (as I did), you’ll see them explained from a different perspective. Many things that I sort of knew became a lot clearer and the relationship between chords, modal flavours and tonal relationships started to seem more obvious. I no longer need to think about some things as they’re a lot more intuitive and logical now. This has helped with how I approach accompanying a song – switching modes now also has a logical rationale, not just a gut feeling that it sounds right. Some of the material is duplicated per mode to allow you to focus on any specific mode, but if you follow it all, the same material in a different context helps it become more embedded. This was a great investment of my time.

I wasn’t sure about getting this as I had followed Xander’s tutorials on YouTube and thought that was enough. However, this is definitely worth the investment. A really superb introduction to the modes, served in bite sized chunks with resources to help you practice and really get a feel of how to apply them. Also Xander is on-hand to answer questions should you run into difficulties, or have any queries. The modes have always been scary, confusing, a bit of a mystery… because many teachers do not know how to teach them in a way that is easy to understand. Xander completely demystifies them and teaches in a way that really gives a thorough understanding. I’d go as far as saying that probably these are the best modes tutorials on the web that I have seen. Nice and centrally located, this is a fantastic resource and is a great companion to his modes series on YouTube. Looking forward to further courses that Xander has to offer.

Closing Thoughts

The musical modes are a gateway to exploring new creativity and emotional depth in your music. Each mode (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian) has its own distinct character. They can give unique colours that can transform your melodies, harmonies, and compositions.

By understanding the modes, you will be able to express everything from joy and sadness to mystery and introspection. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced musician, learning the modes gives you a creative palette to explore new melodies and chord progressions. It will unlock a deeper connection to your instrument and your craft, making music-making not just more effective but fun and fulfilling.

With my Modal Playbook course, you’ll discover how accessible and inspiring the musical modes can be. It’s more than a course—it’s a step into a new world of musical possibilities!

You will be able to choose when to use the Dorian mode for a chord progression or when you need a Phrygian melody. Questions about how the Lydian mode or the Mixolydian mode work will be past tense. You’ll even learn how to write Locrian mode melodies and Locrian chord progressions.

Musical Modes Overview

  • Ionian (Major Scale): The Ionian mode is the same as the major scale. It has a bright, happy, and uplifting sound. Think of most pop and classical music.
  • Dorian: The Dorian mode has a jazzy, bluesy feel. It’s a minor scale with a raised sixth scale degree. This gives it an optimistic sound. It’s the brightest of all minor-oriented modes.
  • Phrygian: The Phrygian mode is often described as dark, mysterious, or exotic, with its lowered second scale degree giving it an almost Middle Eastern or Spanish flavour.
  • Lydian: The Lydian mode has a dreamy, floating sound. It’s a major scale with a raised fourth scale degree. This gives it a sense of tension and wonder. It often feels unresolved which gives it a sense of floating or freedom.
  • Mixolydian: The Mixolydian mode sounds like a major scale with a bluesy, rock-like quality due to its lowered seventh degree. It’s bright but with a bit of a rough edge.
  • Aeolian (Natural Minor Scale): The Aeolian mode is the same as the natural minor scale. It has a melancholic, somber, or emotional quality, often evoking feelings of sadness or introspection.
  • Locrian: The Locrian mode is the most dissonant and unstable one of all. With its lowered second and fifth scale degrees, it sounds tense. It is rarely used as a tonal centre but is effective for creating a sense of unease.

Let the modes guide you, inspire you, and help you create music
that resonates on a deeper level!
