Mindful Harmony App Review: A World of Possibilities

When you first open the app, you’ll notice its clean interface. For this demonstration, I switched to light mode for better visibility. One standout feature is the interactive Circle of Fifths, which can initially seem a bit intimidating but quickly proves invaluable. It highlights tonalities and shows how each chord fits within keys like C Dorian or others.

Technique No.1: Levelling up regular/simple chord progressions

To start, I created a basic 1-4-5 progression in C major (C-F-G). These diatonic chords form the foundation of many popular songs. The app lets you customize everything—from instruments like strings and Rhodes to tempo, time signatures, and note durations. For example, I set the chords to half notes but could easily switch to dotted half, whole, or quarter notes for more rhythmic variation.

Technique No.2: Clicking around technique

The real fun began when I altered some of the chords. I swapped the G major chord for an F minor, introducing a major-minor trick that adds unexpected depth to progressions. Using the app’s “Click Around” technique, I stumbled upon combinations I wouldn’t have considered otherwise. This feature is especially helpful for breaking out of habitual patterns that come from playing familiar chord shapes on instruments like guitar or piano.

Technique No.3: Create lush chords with extensions

One of the most exciting features of the Mindful Harmony app is its auto-voicing option. This ensures smooth transitions between chords by adjusting their voicings seamlessly. For instance, I enabled auto voice leading to connect a minor chord with an altered Gsus4 and F minor, creating a beautiful, cohesive progression.

Extensions are another area where this app shines. Adding sixths, sevenths, or even thirteenths to chords is as simple as a few clicks. For a C major chord, I added a C6 sus2 for a lush, jazzy vibe. Similarly, I transformed a G minor into a G minor 13, adding rich harmonic color.

Exporting Your Creations

Once satisfied with your chord progression, you can export it as a MIDI file. This feature makes it easy to import progressions into a DAW like Ableton or FL Studio or even into notation software such as MuseScore. This flexibility is a game-changer for producers and composers alike.

Technique No.4: Exploring Modal Chord Progressions

For those interested in modal music, the Mindful Harmony app provides a robust platform for experimentation. I crafted a Phrygian progression in E Phrygian (E minor – F – G major – D minor). Staying diatonically within the mode, I added inversions and seventh chords, elevating the progression’s sophistication. Switching the bass notes to first or second inversions was as easy as selecting options from a dropdown menu, further enhancing the texture.
